The Zappia family originated from Southern Italy in the province of Reggio Di Calabria where they owned a small farm, some livestock and an adjoining Stone Mill. The landscape of Calabria is known for its snowcapped mountain tops, surrounding blue Seas, Beaches and diverse agriculture such as Wheat, Calabrian Chili Peppers, robust Lemons, plump Oranges, Grapes for Wine and Olives for Oil. Annual harvesting of Grains brought in provincial farmers to visit the Zappia Mill. Times were tuff but Dom' Michelle Zappia and his newly- wed Wife, Rosina were creative when it came to making ends meet. Farmers would often barter for services with livestock or other commodities when short on the Lira.
Calabria is also known for a beautiful culinary culture and artisanal cooking; we always aim to capture this energy in our products that remain true to their roots.
The Zappia's settled in Endicott, New York and through a tireless work ethic, established our family in America. Michele Zappia (Grandfather) was employed at one of the largest shoe manufacturers in the country, Endicott-Johnson made nearly all of the footwear for the United States Army during World War I & II. To this day, many U.S. Presidents proudly wear specially gifted fine Italian Leather Shoes produced by the now Johnston & Murphy Co. USA
The Zappia family eventually settled in Dayton, Ohio where Carmello (Mel) Zappia founded Salem Chrysler Plymouth. Mary Kay (Wife), Dan and John (Sons) also participated in the business for more than 40 years. This unique entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic helped Dan with the creation of Zappia Foods of Dayton.
